The legend behind why birds are colorful: The birds were flying high crisscrossing a stormy sky when the clouds parted, and a colored rainbow appeared. Each bird choose one of the colored bands to slide down from out of the story sky down to the sunlit ground below. The canary flew down the yellow band, so he was yellow from head to toe. The cardinal flew to the band of red, so he was red from toe to head. The jay bird chose the band of blue, so he was blue when he was through. But the peacock could not decide which color band to ride. He kept changing his mind, so his feathers show all the colors of the rainbow.
