Why Snakes Slither

The legend behind the song.  A long time ago snakes had hands and feet.  One day Snake walked down a street, waving to everyone that he meets.  Snake sees red apples on a tree behind white picket fence.  Snake reaches his hands through the picket fence to grab an apple with his hands.  But Snake could not pull the apple through the slots of the picket fence.  The apple was too big.

Snake pulled and pulled and pulled until Snake’s  arms popped off.   Pop!  Pop!

So Snake stuck his feet through the picket fence and to grab the apple with his feet. But Snake could not pull the apple through the slots of the picket fence.  The apple wasstill  too big.

Snake pulled and pulled and pulled until his legs popped off.   Pop!  Pop!

And that is why the snake slithers today.  They have no arms and no legs.

But there is more to this story.

Spider saw the arms and feet lying scattered in the street. Spider picked them up and plugged them in and walked away with extra limbs.

Do the right thing: Don’t be greedy, or try to take more than you need.

Performance Note: make a popping sound by using your finger and mouth. See youtube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgzyaEz4mC4t to see how.

The song was performed by Martingale, a local band in Portland, Oregon.
