What Happened to the Dinosaurs

The legend behind What Happened To The Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs lived a  long, long time ago. Many were very large and very scary. The story goes that one night the dinosaurs were late for dinner, so they were hungry and grumpy. They screamed and they fought, and they stomped ad the growled. They shouted and they barked, and they  yelled very load. They were so hungry that they started to eat other. Eventually they ate each other up. That is why I’m sorry to say, we do not see any dinosaurs to this very day.

There there may some question about the accuracy of this explanation for why dinosaurs went extinct.. The dinosaurs mentioned in the lyrics did not live at the same time. And the idea that they could eat each other up is (ahem) hard to swallow. And in the case of the very large diplodocus, the story may be (ahem) a tall tale.

The song was performed by Martingale, from band in Portland, Oregon. You can see the base guitar player at the end of the video playing with a couple of dinosaur action figures. Always a boy at heart, he performed the “burp” heard in the video.

Performance Notes

Children like to sing this song because after of the creative  stomping, growing, and chomping actions and sounds they can make while singing. During the singing of the lyrics “chomp, chomp, chomp, burp”  boys will often make sound effects instead of singing “burp.”  This often leads to giggles and a contest among the boys about  who can burp the loudest or longest. While not very dignified, young boys seem to enjoy this. Young girls don’t see  the humor; they often frown and sometimes pinch their noises.

The song was performed by Martingale, a local band in Portland, Oregon.
